What’s new? Wheelchair dancing the Macarena – that’s what!

Some of you may know that my husband and I enjoyed dancing before his motorcycle accident. We danced at the Civil War Ball in Virginia, went Square Dancing together and attended a Victorian ball in Cape May NJ. We also took ballroom dance lessons.

The Civil War Ball

My goal for Arthur as a person and for us as a couple is to find a way to adapt activities that we enjoyed before the accident.

Post accident, Arthur first had to become healthy and strong before we could add anything more to his schedule.

When he was ready, I looked for wheelchair dancing classes locally. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any.

We went to a few parties and weddings and practiced dancing. At first, it was uncomfortable with everyone watching us. You can’t help but see the wheelchair on the dance floor! Once we got over that, we could enjoy dancing the night away. People are so supportive of Arthur dancing in his wheelchair. I think it surprises them and also delights them that he is doing another “normal” thing.

During COVID quarantine we decided to tape a series of dances together. The first one we did was The Git Up Song challenge. In case you missed it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1mc08dMgMk

Our next dance is the Macarena, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM7jq33XFFQ

We hope to inspire others to dance no matter what their skill set is. We especially hope to inspire wheelchair users to dance like no one is watching!

We want to reach as many people as possible to share our message that life doesn’t stop after paraplegia! Please share with your friends. If you’re on YouTube, please subscribe!

Help us out – give us a suggestion for our next dance in the comments below!

Thanks for watching!
